Each year, IMT Computers hosts SIWES (Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme) participants from universities and polytechnics across Lagos and beyond. If you've already secured your placement, here's how to actually get value out of it.
Before You Start: What to Expect
Our SIWES program pairs students with real projects in web development, networking, and fiber optics — giving them practical exposure well beyond the typical classroom experience. Come in expecting to work on something real, not just observe.
How to Get the Most Out of Your Placement
Ask questions — supervisors would rather explain something twice than watch you guess
Take initiative on projects instead of waiting to be assigned every single task
Treat the experience as a real job, not a formality to satisfy your institution
Document what you build or fix — it becomes the portfolio you show at your next job interview
Ask for feedback regularly, not just at the final evaluation
Common Mistakes SIWES Students Make
The biggest one is treating SIWES as a box to tick rather than a real opportunity. Students who show up, do the minimum, and leave with just a signed logbook get far less out of the experience than those who actually engage with the work — and it shows to future employers who ask what you actually did during your placement.
